How Season Grades Work

Beam Brackets college football season grades attempt to produce a mathematical representation of a team’s season performance relative to their competition and historical trends. Season grades are composed of two components: a resume rating and a performance rating. Both are calculated systematically by weighing all teams at once and adjusting initial ratings by using opponent ratings in linear systems. The resume rating is an adjusted win percentage based on results against each opponent and overall strength of schedule, and the performance rating is from an adjusted SRS rating formula. Team grades are scaled based on arbitrary maximum and minimum numerical values produced by the formula, not based on other team rating in their season. Thus, it is possible to compare teams across eras, while recognizing the evolution of college football over the past century and a half.
